CCAGR Holds Successful 2016 Fall Chinese Canadian Farming Seminar

Oakville, November 16, 2016

Canada - China Agriculture and Food Development Exchange Centre
In order to promote the starting of local food and farm businesses, the Canada-China Agriculture and Food Development Exchange Centre (CCAGR) held their annual, well-attended 2016 Fall Chinese Canadian Farming Seminar at Oakville, Ontario on November 16.  This is the third time such an event has been held.  Each time, CCAGR selects and invites 50-60 different new farmers and investors to attend this knowledge-sharing event.   
 
 Dr. John Kelly, CEO of KeliRo Company and a previous executive with the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association, and a Senior Advisor to the CCAGR, delivered the keynote presentation on Canadian agri-food new trends, advantages and export opportunities.  Dr. Sean Westerveld, Ginseng & Herbs Specialist from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs spoke about the history and the best farming practices of Ontario Ginseng.  About 98 % of Ontario Ginseng is exported to Hong Kong and other Asian areas.

Dr. Viliam Zvalo, research scientist for vegetable production systems at the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, informed the conference participants that ethnic vegetables represent a huge opportunity for Canadian agriculture. Lots of Chinese Canadian farmers are interested in growing Asian vegetables to supply local markets.  Mr. Henry Swierenga of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) Member Services introduced OFA history and its various roles. Some of the new farmers showed great interest and will become members of the OFA soon.

Several new Chinese Canadian farmers also spoke their farming experiences in Canada, including Mr. Ken Zhang’ s successful application of Canadian GAP for his fruit farm in Jordan station and Mr. Jackson Bai’s grape farming experience in Niagara-on-the-Lake.  Mr. Henry Du informed the audience on the aspects of cash crop farming in Binbrook, Ontario.  The attendees showed great interest for this seminar and the feedback provided on the event was very positive.

At the conclusion of Seminar, Mr. Youming Zhao (P. Ag.), President of CCAGR spoke to the attendees that through the kind support that the Canadian government, associations and agri-food professionals and local farmers, CCAGR has been working with new Chinese Canadian Farmers and investors to start new farms and local food businesses for the past nine years.  Mr. Zhao indicated that they are very proud that they have helped so many Chinese Canadians be part of Canadian agriculture in last year.  He feels that “Together, We CAN make a difference!”.  Mr. Zhao also indicated that the CCAGR will continue to work with all stakeholders to make better future for Canadian agriculture.
